Design principles of skylit

Hi

My choices for skylit/gallery, as well as this blog, do not seem like having much logic behind them. This is an explanation behind some of them.

You can see the gallery being pretty much as barebones as it gets. I’ve always prefered minimalism, and thanks to such design you can see who I am by just visiting the website and seeing the pictures. You don’t have to wiggle around in some side-menus, everything I have to offer is right there.

The only design feature that breaks that bare aesthetic are the titles on hover, but due to my hatred for not titling my work, they are there. Every title either has some backstory behind it or is just a straight-forward explanation of what’s in the picture.

The Numbers, Sky, What Do They Mean?

The numbers are random, but grouped together by either content or film roll. They (mostly) don’t mean anything.

The whatever blog

The only reason for this blog’s existance is that I like writing. Yep.

The licensing

CC-BY-NC is enough.

I mean, the AI crawlers are gonna rip it anyway, and if an honest dude just wants to use my photo for something, I’d be honored.

I strongly believe creative work should be exempt from copyright for individuals and non-commercial entities. My licencing reflects that belief. That being said, I’d gladly give my work to a business if I’m compensated fairly (and sometimes, just attribution is enough).

I’d love not to have a licence, but bad actors exist, so CC is something I’d rather have than not have in case my works get stolen.

It’s all about the photos anyway

I love shooting film, and I really enjoy having a place to post them how I like, and not like some Design Director wants (cough, Instagram, cough). I don’t want to be constrained by forced aspect ratios and algorithmic feeds. It’s all about the photos.

Thats all for now, thanks! ~~ sky
